Philosophy
behind interiors of resort

Philosophy
Resorts are recreation destinations.
People take holidays either with family of friends and spend their weekends,
at resorts to take a break from their routines mainly to ‘recreate’ mentally
and physically.
With this objective resorts are developed
in the close vicinity of nature, either on hills, or on beaches or in wild
jungles. Being with nature in its virginity helps a person to ‘recreate’.
Architects, Interior Designers and
Landscape Architects with their cohesive efforts should offer the ambience
soothing to this need.
The environs and invirons both should
compliment each other to achieve this goal.
As an architect while planning one
should create spaces non confine open ; with no barriers between Indoors
and Outdoors where the guest does not feel compressed or squeezed.
No doubt a person expects all the comforts
during his stay in resorts but he will like welcoming break from sophistication
of cities to the Virginity of the nature.
Interior Designer plays very important
role here. It is easy to design interiors for individuals needs of client.
House or office is easy to design because this is to cater individual likes
and dislikes. But it is much difficult to design a public space where different
kinds of people keep visiting all with different likes or dislikes but
all with same objective to ‘recreate’ themselves. Interior designer has
to design spaces ‘recreate’ themselves. Interior designer has to design
spaces which majority will appreciate he has to design a space to “Live
in” and not to “Look at”. Many times a designer gets carried away by imposing
himself on the design forgetting that he is doing it for some user who
is looking out for something else. Interiors should be soothing to the
user.
One should give consideration to “for
whom it is created” than to “who is creating”.
It is more an objective rather than
a subjective art unlike a piece of painting.
Normally interior designers, like to
type themselves. Then it gets a stamp of ‘X’ fellows interior or ‘Y’ fellows
interior.
Interior Designer has different elements
to achieve his targetted efforts.
Fixed and loose furniture, layout and
style of furniture’s.
Floor finishing.
Walls and ceiling finishes.
Colour Scheme
Lighting
Correct choice of materials is very
important in designing interiors of a resort.
Many times designers and promoters
mistake in their concepts.
Promoter feels a 5 star resort should
be similar to 5 star city hotel. Recently I had an argument with “Mittale”
on this issue. According to them the specification will have to be same,
I differed to agree.
I had an opportunity to stay in “Phuket
Meridian” resort in Thailand. The finishes were so different yet so soothing.
Flooring :
While designing flooring of a resort
use of lustrous granites and marbles should be avoided. These materials
overpower a person.
Textured stone slabs, quarry tiles
or good quality mosaic citu could be a good flooring. Non processed materials
give friendly look which is close to the nature.
Walls
Walls can be designed keeping their
original looks like stone walls with pointing or exposed brickwork or textured
plaster. Heavy panelling on walls could be out of place.
Ceilings
Ceilings could be left as architectural
finished. False ceilings can be avoided. Exposed trusses, rofters and Mangalore
tiles can look interesting. If at all false ceilings are to be provided
they could e with matts or may be textured plasters.
Fixed and loose Furniture :
Layouts of furniture can be more informal
more open type, less claustrophobic. Spaces of different uses can intermingle
in each other.. Separating walls between Lounges and Restaurants can be
deleted. Low height flowerbeds can serve the purpose. Change in level or
change in floor finish. Change in light intensity will define the functions.
Styling of furniture could be light
and sleek not much of detailing in furniture is required. This becomes
unnecessarily boasting.
Cane or wrought iron painted furniture
with vibrant tapestry with floral motifs can add lot of interest.
I had experimented fixed furniture
in my Khandala resort. Masonary bunks with loose cushions could be less
expensive yet interesting. A concept of built in furniture properly detailed
or configured can generate interest. I even tried fixed bed platforms with
foam mattresses. Colour Schemes :
This is the most important element
in the hands of interior designer which can do and undo things.
The colour schemes should not be undertoned
but at the same time should not be overpowering. Accent colours on few
walls add a lot of effect. Lot of indoor plants with their different green
and few with coloured leaves adds lot of freshness. Eathernware designed
pots can form important part of the scheme. The curtains with natural motifs
of vibrant colours can relive person from mental depression. Colours help
to generate different moods. Different hues (basic colours on colour wheel)
give different moods. They could be warm like reds, yellows and oranges
or they could be cool like blues violates or pinks. They can be drabbed
and passive like grays browns and blacks.
