25k Rental Houses to come up in Thane, Raigad


MMRDA receives Green clearance from the Environment Department
Mumbai, April, 2011: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has received the environmental clearance for its proposed Rental Housing project in the parts of districts of Thane and Raigad falling under the jurisdiction of MMR. The clearance has come for the proposed 25,000 rental houses in these districts.
The clearance from the Environment Department was due for a long time and now the way has been cleared for taking off the project following the approval. Mr. SVR Srinivas, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, “We have continuously been following up with the Department for last 18 months for these approvals. This is a major development which will give impetus to the Rental Housing project. However, recent representations and letter from the Government of Maharashtra to the Chairman of the environmental authority achieved the desired approvals for 10 projects.”
Last week, the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority, chaired by Mr. Asoke Basak, cleared 10 Rental Housing projects located in Raigad and Thane districts. Currently, MMRDA has granted 50 In-Principle Locational Clearances for about 2.75 lacs Rental Housing Units and work for about 13,000 RHUs is in full swing in Thane Mira-Bhayander and Panvel areas.
Mr Srinivas further said, “The green clearance has thus brought the dream of affordable houses closer to reality –courtesy the Government of Maharashtra Rental Housing Scheme being implemented by MMRDA.” MMRDA has also commenced process for empanelment of Project Management Consultants (PMC) and will soon appoint agencies for allotment, operations, and maintenance.
