Mumbai, April 24, 2011: The much awaited city’s first bicycle track at Bandra-Kurla-Complex (BKC) was inaugurated today by the honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr Prithviraj Chavan during the event of BSA Hercules India Cyclothon – Mumbai 2011 edition.
The event was a grand success as about 6,000 enthusiasts participated in this national event. While inaugurating Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA’s) dedicated bicycle track, Mr Chavan said, ““With the introduction of the cycle-track, an attempt is made to back human combat against the global warning and also to create awareness about the need to maintain ecological balance.”
In its continuous pursuit to provide “total development” to the nook n’ corner of the vibrant Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has developed a 13 km cycle-track spread over the ‘G’ Block in the Bandra-Kurla Complex at a cost of rupees 6.5 crores.
He added, “MMRDA has done an excellent job by constructing this cycle track. This track of 13km will now be extended by 3km making it up to 16km. This is a small but important step in reducing carbon emission as well as promoting sport and health in the city.”
Looking at the response to cyclothon, Mr Chavan announced that in association with MMRDA, steps will be taken to create infrastructure for cycling sport in the city. The honourable Member of Parliament Mr Milind Deora,, Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, Mr Ratnakar Gaikwad and Mr Rahul Asthana, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA along with the other officials of Authority were present at the event.
Mr Asthana said, “We are happy with the encouragement by Mr Chavan for extending the BKC bicycle track by 3km. The way we completed the project well within deadline, we would also take up the extension work shortly. The track would help the residents, school children and working people in BKC.”
The track is given a unique identity to the track by painting it green to differentiate from vehicular road.
