5000 acres of Salt Pan Land will be put to use

Salt Pan land on the eastern coast of Mumbai will be put to use, according to government of India. Replying to the answer raised by Shri Shivaji Rao Patil, Ministry of Commerce and Industry in its unstarred question no 258 dated 14th March 2006, said that Government have taken an ‘in-principle’ decision to use the salt pan land to cater to the bonafide needs of Government departments, to implement urban infrastructure projects and for public purposes.
Shri Patil was concern about encroachment on Salt Pan land in Mumbai. Replying the question Shri Ashwani Kumar, minister of state in the Ministry of Commerce gave the detailed areas under Salt Pan Land and its use.
The suffocating Mumbai’s population is now having some hope to have above 13000 acres of land within Mumbai limits. This will not only give open space, public housing and space for infrastructure development but also enhance the market supply for dwelling units.
The Salt Pan lands in Mumbai are under the possession of the Deptt. of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Mahrashtra Chamber of Housing Industry, Mahesh Garodia and others and Lok Housing & Construction Ltd. have approached the Ministry of Urban Development in connection with the utilization of Salt Pan lands.
Also Bai Coomi Pirozsha Bhartania/Nadirsha Pirozsha & Company, lessee of Shepherd and Shepherd Annexe Salt Works, Shri Garodia, lessee of Arthur and Jenkins Salt Works, Shri Chheda of Pestomsagar Salt Works (Now Chheda Nagar)and Lok Housing Construction Ltd. of Hanuman Salt Works etc. approached The Deptt. of Industrial Policy & Promotion for development of the land.
