Mumbai:
Free housing for slum dwellers will be a reality soon. As on Monday at Mntralaya Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan announced that earlier irregularities in the Slum Rehabilitation Act (SRA) vis-a-vis the occupiers in pre-1995 slum structures was rectification required.
Whoever, moved in the slum after the 1st Jan, 95 will be eligible for house but has to pay an ostensible transfer charges. The charges is being seen as the “means” to fulfi the Congress’s promise to provide free housing to all slum-dwellers up to 2000.
According to the SRA scheme, in case if shanty has been built pre cut-off date and a person moves into a slum before the same, both are safe. However, those had moved in shanty in 95 but after the cut-off date are not eligible for free housing. But on the other hand, under the DCR rule, the holder of rented property will be illegible for free housing in case of redevelopment.
