Incandescent bulbs banned in Tamilnadu
In order to put a step further towards greener future and sustainability, various Government offices and related organisations in Tamil Nadu were ordered to stop the use of energy intensive incandescent bulbs across the state and instead were ordered to use the compact fluorescent lamps for the purpose of saving the power.
The age old technology of the incandescent lamp is not energy efficient when compared with the other energy efficient modern day light sources. When compared the energy consumption of 4 crore incandescent bulbs (60 watts ) with 4 crore CFLs i.e. Compact Fluorescent Lamps ( 14 watts ) for an hour, the use of CFL can results in a whopping saving of 1,840 MW. While the four crore 60W incandescent bulbs burning for an hour would consume 2,400 MW, a similar number of 14W CFLs would consume only 560 MW.
According to the order, the ban was applicable to state government undertakings, government boards, cooperative societies, local bodies and organisations getting governmental assistance.
