Metro line – II receives Central Railway’s support

Mumbai April 5, 2011:
The recent robust actions of the Central Railway and MMRDA are indicating that railway authority is now flexed its muscles to finish the pending works of Metro Line I as well as II. Central Railway (CR) has shown its commitment towards success of the infrastructure projects of Metro and Mono being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Moreover, the CR has also taken up to expedite the Metro Line – II cross over bridge at Kurla and Mankhurd.
On 30th March in the Board of Directors meeting MMRDA has reviewed the progress work of the Mumbai Metro One Private Limited and also instructed to MMOPL to expedite Metro Line – I. Whereas in a letter to MMRDA, the Central Railway stated that ‘it is committed to the success of Metro line project and will make all possible efforts to expedite ‘in principle’ approval of crossing at Kurla and Mankhurd.’ The authorities at MMRDA have welcomed the CR’s warm response expecting that it would help a lot to complete the project in anticipated timeframe.
Mr Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director (PR), MMRDA said, “The construction works of the bridges at Kurla and Mankhurd are very essential components of the project. We are very happy to receive the kind support of the Central Railway. Officials from both the organizations are in the process of finalizing the technical aspects. Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd Metro line is a crucial project for efficient mass rapid transit as the pressure for creating appropriate linkages among suburban areas of Western, Central and Harbour lines is increasing.”
The Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd corridor of Mumbai Metro begins from Charkop and stretches towards Mankhurd via Bandra and Kurla. The proposed Metro alignment is passing along major arterial roads of city road networks. The corridor has total 27 numbers of stations for better accessibility and also to achieve good ridership. The corridor would have total length of 31.871 km. The total cost of project is estimated at Rs. 8,250 crore.
