MMRDA estimates Rs. 1. 13 k crore investment for MMR makeover

Mumbai May 16, 2010 – The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) which is at the forefront of the development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), comprising the mega city of Mumbai and a rapidly growing hinterland have estimated that in coming four years an approximate total of Rs. 1, 13,000 crore would be required to develop infrastructure facilities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
In charge of majority of the Mumbai makeover plans, MMRDA is working with a core group of experts from different sectors to assess and formulate various strategies and plans towards long-term development of the metropolis. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is spread over 4,355 sq km, includes 20 urban regions, four districts and 1,000 villages.
The earlier estimated investment of Rs 75,000 crore will need to be upgraded as infrastructure demands are increasing by the day and a sufficient fund base would be required to speed up the ongoing projects and also to manage the projects that are in the pipeline.
Mr. Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA says “carrying out infrastructure projects of such large scale in a city like Mumbai is an enormous challenge. It is indeed satisfying to see that these projects are on the fast track and would soon make that world of difference to the way infrastructure in Mumbai is perceived”.
MMRDA has made considerable progress over the past few years. Mega projects like the Metro and Mono are running ahead of their schedule. Majority of the proposed skywalks are nearing completion.
The MMRDA has approved 25 Letter of Intent for the construction of more than two lakh houses under the rental housing scheme. Of the 24,000 toilet seats to be constructed under the Nirmal Abhiyan scheme, 20,000 have already been completed and the remainder is to be completed soon.
The Mumbai Urban Transport Project and Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Projects have already made a significant impact to the lives of Mumbaikars.
To give the city of Mumbai the real numero uno status the authority has planned an innovation park. Many countries in the world have chalked their progress path through the research and development done in innovation parks. On the same lines Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce gave a presentation to MMRDA very recently. The innovation park that is set up near Venice enjoys the company of more than 1600 scientists. An innovation park such as this will certainly add a feather in Mumbai’s cap and also set the country on the way ahead.
The recently announced Iconic Tower project will only add to the pride of Mumbai. Many quality developers, Indian as also foreign, have shown interest in construction this Iconic Tower. The Tower will enjoy connectivity from the Eastern Freeway, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Mono Rail and, of course, the Eastern Express Highway. The top 30 floors of this Iconic Tower will be spared for the International corporates, Entertainment Zones, high-end hotels and their service apartments.

Another relevant project is multi-modal corridor that is 140 km long and will run from Virar to Alibaug. This corridor will have 8 lanes with dedicated lanes for buses. The median will carry an elevated Metro route. This multi-modal corridor starts from Virar and reaches Alibaug via Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli and Panvel in only an hour.
There are several other projects undertaken by MMRDA that will consciously transform Mumbai’s Infrastructure and development which will lead towards better and secure standard of living of every Mumbaikar.
