MMRDA launches odour control device for Mithi

MITHI-ODOUR-CONTROL

Mr.Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), launched on the bank of Mithi, an innovative oxygen infusion device system to control the foul odours emanating from Mithi. “We have installed this device on a three month experimental basis. National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) will examine, study and evaluate the results of the device and it is thereafter the MMRDA will decide on the course ahead”, said Mr.Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA. “DynamOx oxygen infusion devices can effectively raise the oxygen reduction potential. The Environmental Consulting Technology Inc. (ECT) has been applying this technology very effectively for River Rogue, in Michigan and USA. The 6 km stretch up to CST Bridge, Kurla, is under experiment. The residents of the Bandra-Kurla area will surely be relieved of the odours emanating from the highly polluted Mithi, should this experiment succeed”, said Mr.Gaikwad further.

The DynamOx oxygen infusion device operates automatically. It will run 24X7 and will oxidize about fifteen gallons of water every minute. The device will not only help reduce fetid odours but will also help grow fish habitation. The device has been rented to MMRDA by the Environmental Consulting Technology Inc. for the experiment. “The ECT has already imparted training to the electrical and mechanical engineers from MMRDA. They have also agreed for the technology transfer to facilitate manufacturing of such tools”, informed Mr.Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director (PR). “This is a patented technology. However, we will certainly share all the technical and related expertise with the MMRDA and help them fabricate bigger devices in India itself. This will save a lot of expenditure and make the project more economical”, said Dr.Kastury further.

The MMRDA has spent about USD 1,00,000/- for the import, insulation and three-month rent of the device. Installation of the device is a part of Mithi beautification project.
