MMRDA offers tenements to Sarvodaya Staff Quarter residents at Gautam Nagar, Govandi
Mumbai, April 12, 2010 – The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has offered tenements at Gautam Nagar, Govandi, to the 101 residents of the Sarvodaya Staff Quarters. The residents can now shift, temporarily, to the tenements at Govandi and return to the Staff Quarters once the building is repaired to habitable condition.
The MMRDA, at present, is busy constructing the first Metro Rail Corridor from Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar and the Sarvodaya Staff Quarters are beyond the purview of the corridor’s alignment. “However, since the building has been declared “unsafe”, and is likely to suffer further damage because of the ensuing piling work for the Metro corridor, the MMRDA has – as a goodwill gesture – offered temporary tenements to the residents of the Sarvodaya Staff Quarters”, said Ms.Ashwini Bhide, Joint Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA. The Authority has already handed over the tenements to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The Corporation is in process of shifting the residents of the Staff Quarters to the tenements at Gautam Nagar, Govandi.
“Since the residents of the Sarvodaya Staff Quarters are not affected by the Metro Rail Project and or by any of the projects implemented by the MMRDA, the question of providing tenements on permanent basis does not arise”, said Ms.Bhide further.
The MMRDA, therefore, appeals to the residents to accept the tenements – for their own safety – and help the authorities complete the project on time.
The Sarvodaya Staff Quarters building has been declared “unsafe” and is facing action from the office of the Assistant Commissioner, ‘N’ Ward, since 2001 as per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Act. The repairs and the safety of the residents of the said building rests completely with the Sarvodaya Hospital Trust, and the Corporation is entitled to hold the Trust responsible for the same.
