Mumbai, January 26, 2010 – There was clapping ovation amidst cheers and slogans of “Bharatmata ki Jai” as the Honourable Chief Minister flagged of the Mono Rail Test on the Independence Day. This was also a moving moment for a few of the engineers and workers as the blue-beauty moved and the team of drivers opened the doors to wave India flag. Even the Malaysian crew, from Scomi who have built the Mono Rail, joined in the slogans of “Bharatmata ki jai”.

“This is Mumbaikars’ moment of success. Infrastructure projects, as big as Metro and Mono Rails, cannot be completed successfully without their support. I am sure, this test will instill a lot of confidence in Mumbaikars who are backing our infrastructure projects”, said the Honourable Chief Minister, Mr.Ashok Chavan.

“I quite identify with the Mumbaikars who are adjusting their day-to-day life with the work of Metro and Mono Rails and supporting us. With this successful test of the Mono Rail, I would like to promise them a permanent comfort for today’s inconvenience, which is only temporary”, expressed Mr.Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.

The permanent comfort was evident when the Honourable Chief Minister inaugurated Hindamata flyover amidst “Bappa Morya” chants from the Mumbaikars who had gathered in good number to witness the ceremony. The rupees 32-crore flyover is 480 meters long and 16 meters wide with two northbound and southbound lanes each. Hindamata flyover is the second flyover thrown open for traffic after the Sion Hospitan flyover. The other two flyovers, at Lalbaug and King’s Circle, on Dr.Ambedkar road will also be opened this year.

There were two other occasions where the Honourable Chief Minister first performed the Bhoomipujan of the National Mass Transit Training and Research Institute to be set up by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) at a cost of rupees five crores in Bandra-Kurla Complex, behind MMRDA office building. The Honourable Chief Minister thereafter inaugurated the Residential Building of MMRDA. The intent of constructing this 9-storey building is to save officials’ time on travel and fuel and also make sure they devote more time for public cause.
